Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

-Maintains the microform collection of the University library.
-Inventories, processes and shelves microform collection.
-Insures that the data available through the on-line catalog is correct and updated.
-Insures that the printouts of holdings by format (periodicals, newspapers, annual reports, microcard, etc.) are updated and maintained.
-Perform basic maintenance on 26 microform readers and six readers/printers, including: minor repairs, lamp replacement, and cleaning plus daily servicing of toner and paper.
-Maintains the orderliness of the collection through reshelving, shifting and supervising the reading of shelves.
-Performs other duties as needed.
-Corresponds with patrons via phone or by mail.
-Responsible for maintaining daily and annual statistics for annual reports.
-Oversee patron use of the microfilm collection of the Sherrod library, which includes over of over one million bibliographic of items. Included in this are newspapers, magazines, theses, and microcopies of rare publications.
-Teaches students and faculty how to locate the above items in the collection.
-Assist genealogical researchers in the location of family information in the census, military, and county records.
-Teach patrons how to use both the microform reader and the readers/printers.
-Handle case sales, departmental charges, and interlibrary loan copies.
-Be knowledgeable of in the use of a variety of hard copy indexes, including the general purpose periodical and special collection access tool.
-Be knowledgeable of material not yet been placed on the on-line catalog so that patrons needing that material can access it.
-Oversee the retrieval of material locked stacks.
-Along with other members of department oversee the help desk when student workers are not available of away from the desk.
-Responsible for instructing patrons in the use of the various on-line databases available in the periodicals, including the on-line library catalog (Voyager) and various other databases (INFOTRAC, PsycLit, MLA Bibliography, Medline, and others including the internet).
-This involves one on one instruction on the organization of periodicals and other library materials.
-Know all aspects of the public services open to patrons in order to advise patrons intelligently on how to obtain the information they need.
-In conjunction with the bindery clerk ensures that volumes being withdrawn are available in the microform collection.
-Ensure that all volumes being withdrawn are actually part of the collection.
-Supervise all student workers for both microforms as well as periodicals during the evening hours.

-Know how to check-in, process materials received, scheduling of student workers, as well as other tasks generally assigned to other members of the staff.
-Serve not only the needs of the microforms department but also periodicals.
-Routinely use word processing, spreadsheets, Argus, label writer, and the internet.
