Job Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge in the area of legal library services and community legal resources. Knowledge of policies established by the state of Tennessee Library System and Federal Depository Library. Knowledge in the area of state and federal documents. Knowledge of law library materials, map collection, government information, and law library information systems. Ability to operate automated library information system and to instruct others in their use. Ability to type, proof-read and manage filing and classification systems. Extensive knowledge of the Internet, library system applications (Sierra, cataloging, circulation, reserve modules, library guides, online catalog), University systems, electronic databases, etc. Knowledge of map classification systems and circulation. Knowledge of library goals and objectives, policies and procedures. Knowledge of principles and methods of supervision. Effective problem resolution and research skills. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public, and other employees. Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of procedures regarding the handling and preservation of the rare books collection.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and one year relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of the Bachelors degree

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

Processes federal and state documents as per Tennessee state and Federal Depository Library Program guidelines

Assists patrons in conduction legal and government information searches using manual and automated library information systems.

Assists the Head of the Documents, Law, and Maps Dept. in ensuring the department continues to operate within the legal requirements and program regulations of the Federal Depository Library Program.

Maintains law, maps, and both Tennessee state and federal documents collections.

Communicates with other libraries to obtain information and/or materials.

Assists patrons with government document, law, and maps reference materials and demonstrates use of automated library information systems and other library equipment.

Schedules, trains, and supervises student workers and graduate assistants in departmental and library policies including legal library procedures.

Assists in the maintenance, retrieval, and circulation of the Sherrod Library Rare books collection.

Provides assistance to the departmental head in developing and expanding the government document, law, and map collections in order to improve patron access and general library operations.

Helps coordinate the use of the government documents area by classes and other departments within the East Tennessee State University community as needed.

In the absence of the department head, maintains the daily operations of the Government Document, Law, and Maps department.

Consults with other staff and faculty regarding acquisitions and processing of new materials, plan for space requirements, new services, budget allocations, equipment, gift policy and item processing within the Government Documents, Law, and Maps department.

Description of Job Duty

Maintains and updates the library catalog as relates to the government documents, law, and map collection using online library system.

Assists patrons in the use and operation of library equipment including computers, copy machines, printers, and scanners.

Assists patrons with book selection and reference materials.

Prepares departmental statistics, reports and maintains files for the government documents, law, and maps department.

Interprets library and departmental policies and procedures, assisting other departmental staff and library patrons as appropriate.

Analyzes patron information needs, selects and recommends library resources to best match educational and research needs.

Interprets library policy and procedures for patrons; responds to special requests and questions in person, on the telephone, by email, and by other electronic communication systems.

May conduct searches and compile results for patrons in divers subjects or formats, e.g., print, online databases, CD-ROM.

Performs bibliographic search and verification, rectify inconsistencies, enter new data and modify format for specialized internal and external databases; verify, edit and enter information for online catalog and automated ordering system.

Attends training sessions relevant to position.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
