Job Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the geographic area of campus. * Ability to follow the rules and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission pertaining to transmitting and receiving messages by shortwave. * Ability to operate a short wave radio and receiving equipment. * Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action. * Ability to understand and follow instructions. * Ability to speak clearly with a well-modulated voice and professional manner. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, students and other employees. * Ability to operate a personal computer.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED. Must be computer literate. Successful completion of the National Communications Institutes Basic Communications Officers Course. Must receive and maintain CPR certification and certification with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in query certification of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Applicant must be at least 18 years of age, a citizen of the United States; must pass a criminal background check; and if a prior member of the armed forces, must have an honorable or medical discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States. TCA 7-86-201 required taking and passing a medical physical, and a mental evaluation in accordance with the American Psychiatric Association.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty
  • Answers incoming calls to police and fire departments by way of internal telephone extensions, normal 7-digit telephone numbers, and 9-1-1 emergency phone system.
  • Collects pertinent information from callers and disseminates that information to responding units or agencies.
  • Determines the priority level of requests for services and mitigates those calls that can be handled without a need for committing department resources to a response.
  • Monitors and dispatches for all police and fire alarm activations.
  • Maintains the CAD records of all responses and services provided by the police and fire departments.
  • Greets and provides services to visitors to the police station’s lobby.
  • Registers all warrants from surrounding jurisdictions and assigns to officers at ETSU to serve.
  • Complies and prints daily statistics for each officer.
  • Monitors security camera system for investigations as necessary.
  • Maintains certification in CPR.
  • Maintains certification with TBI in query certification of NCIC.
  • Completes the National Communications Institutes Basic Communications Officers Course.
  • Works any shift and additional shifts or hours as staffing requirements demand.
