Job Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of practices used in the operation of grounds and landscape maintenance, and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of state, city, and campus traffic regulations.
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, electrical components of equipment, and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of the care and use of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in Grounds and Landscape maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of light to heavy trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operation all Grounds and Landscape maintenance equipment, heavy equipment, and trucks.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate equipment and repair equipment for extended periods of time under unfavorable climatic conditions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in evaluation situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to execute preventative maintenance programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of required tools and equipment, both specialized and common.
  • Ability to use a variety of tolls and equipment required for the performance of duties.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair uncommon issues of Grounds and Landscape equipment.
  • Ability to order parts for equipment and make repairs in timely manner.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. required; minimum two (2) years experience required; Small Engine Repair Training, Storm Water Pollution Prevention training, Hazardous Waste and Spill training, Heavy Equipment Operator training required; CDL class A drivers license required.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty
  • Performs all preventative maintenance for all grounds and landscape equipment, and heavy equipment.
  • Performs repair work for all mowers, power hand tools, and other miscellaneous grounds equipment.
  • Services gasoline and diesel engines for all grounds and landscape equipment.
  • Performs preventative and repair service for golf carts and utility vehicles on campus including parking services, ITS, and Campus Recreation.
  • Uses diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Schedules maintenance for all grounds and landscape equipment.
  • Inspects equipment to make sure it is functioning safely and properly.
  • Maintains equipment repair records, parts inventory, and inspection reports of equipment.
  • Orders repair and replacement parts for grounds equipment.
  • Responsible for fuel use logs for gasoline and diesel fuel usage on campus; maintains fuel pumps.
  • Serves as primary mechanic during inclement weather; on call and available when required.

  • Assists in grounds maintenance operations as needed; mowing, flower planting and maintenance, leaf removal.
  • Operates heavy equipment and commercial trucks as needed.
  • Repairs ETSU fleet vehicles for minor repairs (light bulbs, windshield wipers, flat tires).
  • Performs Shop Equipment Manager duties including inventory equipment and parts, inventory tools, keeping shop organized, operating all equipment periodically to ensure safety and functionality.
