Job Summary

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in installing and repairing pipe systems, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment and performing related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of plumbing. – Knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints and specifications. – Knowledge of all plumbing materials. – Ability to use tools required in the plumbing trade. – Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions. – Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.

Completion of a standard apprenticeship in the plumbing trade.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

-Reads blueprints, building plans, and drawings to determine equipment required and sequence of installments.

-Inspects structure prior to installation of pipe to determine obstructions to be avoided.

-Locates and marks position of pipe/pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.

-Cuts openings in walls/floors for pipes and pipe fittings, and closes and fireproofs openings.

-Cuts, threads, bends, and joins pipes.

-Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes.

-Fills and tests pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine leaks.

-Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, i.e., sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, laundry equipment, cafeteria equipment, etc.

-Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending burst pipes beneath roads, lawns, etc.

-Installs and maintains propane tanks.

-Installs and maintains natural gas lines.

-Completes work orders for supervisor’s signature.

-Repairs and maintains domestic hot/cold water distribution system, return line, pipes, sewers and showers.

-Maintains distilled water machine/system, water filters, and back flow preventers.

-Reads water meters and logs amounts.
