Job Summary

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in preparing and painting buildings, equipment, furniture, and various other surfaces and performing related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of painting. – Knowledge of paints, colors, and mixing of colors. – Knowledge of surface preparations, primers, sealers, undercoats and thinners. – Knowledge of the equipment used in painting. -Ability and willingness to work at height required.

Completion of standard apprenticeship in the painting trade.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

-Reads work orders/instructions to determine type and kind of materials needed, time allowance between coats, number of coats required, adequacy or surface preparation, and areas to be painted.

-Smooth and prepares surfaces prior to painting using sandpaper, brushed or steel wool, and removes old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scraper, wire brush or blowtorch.

-Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other filler using caulking gun and putty knife.

-Selects premixed paints and paints that match specific colors.

-Moves furniture prior to painting.

-Spreads dropcloths over floors and room furnishings.

-Applies primer, sealer, and undercoats to office interiors and applies finish and/or protective coats to walls and ceilings.

-Erects scaffolding, sets up ladders, and sets stages to perform tasks above ground level.

-Paints exterior building trim and windows.

-Paints curbs, street parking spaces, athletic fields, trash cans, poles, benches, etc.

-Removes wallpaper.

-Paints and finishes cabinets, shelves, filing cabinets, etc.

-Replaces broken window glass, and glazes windows.

-Paints logos in minidome.

-Provides information for work orders, i.e., dates, materials, time, for supervisor’s signature.

-Paints in spray booth.

-Engraves signs using metal sign machine.

-Maintains signing material inventory and prepares purchase orders.
