Job Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the operation and use of equipment and materials used in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of grounds and landscape maintenance principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of practices used in the operation of assigned heavy equipment and heavy duty vehicles.
  • Knowledge of State, city, and campus traffic regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of a broad spectrum of tasks associated with grounds and landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to perform all tasks associated with grounds and landscape maintenance.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment for extended periods under unfavorable climatic conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and workers of lower classification.

Required Qualifications

Successful completion of high school. Certified Heavy Equipment Operator through ETSU EH&S, Hazard Waste and Spill Prevention training, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan annual training required. Two (2) years experience required. Class A CDL Drivers License required.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty
  • Operates heavy equipment for grounds maintenance tasks and for other trades when necessary.
  • Serves as Grounds Maintenance Zone foreman who supervises, performs, and inspects the work of other employees in his zone.
  • Schedules work for zone workers to complete tasks efficiently and on time.
  • Primary driver for snow removal duties, driving the large truck to maintain primary campus roads in snow events.
  • Serves as primary contact for all inclement weather and emergency grounds incidents (wind damage, storm/flood damage, etc.) on campus.
  • Trains other employees on safe and effective use of heavy equipment.

Description of Job Duty
  • Works in grounds maintenance zone performing mowing, weedeating, blowing, leaf removal and landscape tasks within zone.
  • Inspects heavy equipment for mechanical problems and helps mechanic maintain heavy equipment.
  • Assists in electrical shop duties when needed or the shop is short handed.
  • Assists campus arborists in large tree removals utilizing heavy equipment or boom lifts.
  • Loads and hauls brush to off campus location in large dump truck.
  • Repairs and replaces all campus street signage; performs annual maintenance of signage for parking services.
  • Operates leaf removal vacuum and truck to remove leaves from campus; maintains the dump site for leaves.
