Job Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of fire codes. Knowledge of state and federal safety. Knowledge of campus and local area provisionsfor emergency and fire situations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to work independantly. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action. Knowledge of fire alarm systems and ability to repair them. Knowledge of electronics. Basic computer skills.

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree International Municipal Signal Association certification in fire alarm inspection program Minimum of 3 years of experience Interior Fire Alarm Certification

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

Performs annual National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code inspections, maintains inspection and records, troubleshoots problems, and performs daily maintenance on all fire alarm systems.

Troubleshoots problems and repairs on all fire alarm panels, pull stations, smoke and heat detectors, and other associated equipment.

Maintains all panic buttons on the ETSU and VA campuses.

Conducts tests on all fire related systems and maintains all associated inspection records.

Provides 24/7 on-call response when emergency and life safety systems require immediate maintenance.

Coordinates fire protection readiness with Public Safety Dispatchers and Officers.

Supports facilities personnel and contractors with issuance of Hot Work Permits per NAPA 51B, the standard for fire prevention during welding, soldering, cutting, and other hot work activities.

Assists in fire safety and fire extinguisher training for students, faculty, and staff.

Description of Job Duty

Inspects buildings for flammable liquids, blocked exits, and other fire hazards; ensures that all deficiencies are corrected.

Checks fire extinguishers, sprinklers, and fire alarms to ensure they are operating properly.

Inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment for violations of safety codes and standards.

Provides technical information and recommendations to departments on how to eliminate fire and safety hazards.

Serves as both formal and informal means of reporting unsafe conditions.

Assists and conducts fire drills in occupied university buildings.

Assists in the development of fire extinguisher procedures and ongoing training requirements associated with the program for Housing and university personnel.

Works with outside agencies.

Trains and supervises student workers and co-workers when additional resources are required during system inspections and fire drills.

Assists the Director in maintaining the university’s mass notifications siren system.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
