Job Summary

Responsible to the Associate Dean of Learning Resources for implementation of effective teaching and learning technologies within the Quillen College of Medicine through evaluation, selection, implementation, and support of educational technology; training faculty, staff and students on relevant technologies, providing classroom and content delivery support, and communicating closely with members of the college faculty about needs and concerns; serving as the college expert on educational uses of software, hardware, web-based tools, and technologies for effective instruction, and acts as a liaison to other ETSU technology-focused departments and services; support of Quillen College of Medicine’s 234 teaching faculty, with a special emphasis on support of teaching faculty for preclinical medical courses (approximately 30 teaching faculty) and the biomedical graduate program (14 teaching faculty); closely monitors developments in education, medical education, and technology, and proposes technological solutions and innovations to support the college’s mission; and other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of common technologies including those used in instructional design and content delivery.
  • Knowledge of technologies for classroom support and course management.
  • Knowledge of theory and trends in education.
  • Ability to effectively train faculty and staff on cutting edge technologies, including evaluation and application.
  • Ability to develop clear instructional materials including support manuals when appropriate.
  • Ability to evaluate the likely effectiveness, benefits, and costs of implementing any technology in order to carefully and appropriately deploy college resources.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students, including relevant offices and programs throughout the university.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with two years of relevant experience in information technology required; technology experience in an education or library setting preferred.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty
  • Evaluates and recommends technologies that facilitate effective teaching and learning.
  • Leads effective use of existing university technologies and coordinates with relevant offices such as Information Technology Services and Medical Simulation.
  • Consults with faculty, staff, and administration regarding existing technology needs.
  • Trains faculty and staff on content delivery techniques and related technologies.
  • Provides on-site support and troubleshooting in classrooms and for implemented technologies such as D2L (course management), Tegrity (lecture capture), and computer-based examinations, including on-call emergency support during class sessions.
  • Conducts group training and presentation sessions to build instructors’ awareness of available technologies.
  • Conducts one-on-one training and consultation with faculty and staff regarding educational approaches and technology integration.
  • Contributes to the college’s web presence and other public-facing technology applications (e.g., social media, public YouTube videos).
  • Advises and aids faculty and staff in assuring the accessibility of implemented technologies (such as assistance with automated closed captioning).
  • Ensures effective use of existing university technologies and coordinates with relevant offices and programs such as Information Technology Services and Medical Simulation.
  • Coordinates with existing IT support personnel throughout the college.
  • Monitors developments in education and technology and leads in implementing appropriate technological advancements.
  • Maintains own knowledge of technology applications and educational pedagogy and trends through continued education and training.
  • Develops and maintains working knowledge of technologies in use including screen capture, audience response, exam software, mobile devices and mirroring, video recording, editing and formatting, design/editing software, electronic notes, and other tools; builds network for other campus experts for appropriate referrals when needed.

  • Serves as main point of contact for faculty and staff in exploring technologic applications for learning.
  • Maintains relationships with relevant offices such as IT and eLearning.
  • Supports the home department- Department of Learning Resources (including the medical library) ? in selecting, implementing, and supporting new technological approaches; aids the department in securing TAF funding for innovative projects.
  • Serves on department, college and university committees as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
