Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of Operations, the Autopsy Technician 2 will serve as a working supervisor who will oversee, plan and prioritize the work of autopsy technicians while performing the same and/or more complex duties of those being led. Duties to include but not limited to, supervising autopsy technicians, ensuring efficiency of work flow, assisting the pathologist in examining bodies and conducting autopsies. The Autopsy Technician 2 will maintain morgue and autopsy supplies/equipment, develop and implement policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles of a working supervisor.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy/physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of lab techniques and lab safety.
    *knowledge of evidence preservation and collection principles.
  • Skill in completing documentation and paperwork related to work assignment.
  • Skill in eviseration techniques.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and possess the physical strength needed to lift, push, pull or carry objects of 50lbs without assistance and must be able to push, pull and tug bodies from autopsy table to autopsy table in excess of 400lbs with assistance; performs moderately labor intensive work.
  • Ability to work with decedents in decomposed state and work in malodorous conditions.
  • Ability to keep detailed records and produce detailed reports for management in regard to supply inventory and quality assurance measures.
  • Ability to use an air purifying respirator by ETSU Health & Safety.
  • Ability to work safely with chemical, biological, microbiological, pathogenic and other potential hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written).
  • Ability to be thorough and pay meticulous attention to detail when performing tasks and completing documentation.
  • Ability to be open to change and new information; adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
  • Ability to deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations.
Required Qualifications

High school or equivalent. Three (3) years of forensic autopsy technician experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or forensic science with course work in anatomy and physiology preferred. Some supervisory experience is preferred.

Physical Demands

Must be physically able to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to possess the physical strength needed to lift, push, pull or carry objects of 50lbs without assistance and must be able to push, pull and tug bodies from autopsy table to autopsy table in excess of 400lbs with assistance; performs moderately labor intensive work. Must be able to use variety of autopsy instruments and equipment. Must be able to operate multiple office machines and equipment such as digital camera, x-ray machine, computer, copy machine.

Job Duties

These are the job duties required of the position.

Description of Job Duty

*Under general supervision of the Director of Operations oversees, plans, schedules and prioritizes the work of autopsy technicians while performing the same and/or more complex duties of those being led.

*Assists pathologist in performance of forensic autopsies to include collection of toxicological and microbiologic specimens, and evisceration.

*Ensures toxicology is packaged and submitted appropriately following standard operating procedures.

*Ensures microbiology specimens are collected, packaged and submitted to the lab following standard operating procedures.

*Collection/preservation, packaging and logging of evidence in accordance with standard operating procedures.

*Prepares station and body for autopsy by ensuring identity and documenting integrity of body bag seal, initial photography, documenting weight and height of body.

*Inventories personal effects of decedent.

*Performs autopsy photography, ensuring high quality images.

*Performs x-rays as needed while maintaining x-ray technique log, and prepares copies of radiology images on disc.

*Monitors condition of decedent and personal effects following postmortem examination.

*Admits and releases bodies following established protocol.

*Ensures accurate and timely submission of histology cassettes and return of glass slides.

*Responsible for the cleanliness and order of autopsy room.

*Monitors and/or maintains safety, sanitation, and custodial conditions of the morgue as mandated by standard operating procedures.

*Ensures that body diagrams and other forms needed by pathologist are stocked routinely.

*Ensures autopsy stations and locker areas are stocked with proper equipment, supplies and PPE for use during autopsy procedure.

*Monitors and/or prepares soiled linen for pick up by laundry service and maintains clean linen at autopsy stations for use during autopsy procedure.

*Maintains logs of morgue coolers and freezers.

*Maintains clean and organized tissue stock room and specimen freezer; ensures disposal of wet and frozen tissue using established protocol.

*Trains new autopsy technicians as per the physician’s recommendations and protocols.

*Assists the pathologist with instructing medical students and residents in evisceration technique.

*Provides technical assistance to attending and residents in the performance of hospital autopsies.

*Assures proper maintenance of all equipment within the morgue.

*Monitors and maintains inventory of necessary supplies utilized by morgue staff and submits order request for supplies.

*Reviews all incoming morgue supply orders for completeness and informs Director of Operations that order is in and correct or of any problems.

*Monitors quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards in the morgue.

*Assists Director of Operations in quality review of technician documentation, autopsy photographs, radiology technique, evisceration speed and skill.

*Assists Director of Operations with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for morgue operations.
