Job Summary

Work performed in supervising a group of utility workers maintaining the grounds on campus. Supervises personnel engaged in cutting grass, trimming and pruning shrubs and trees, planting flowers, and a variety of other tasks associated with grounds maintenance and landscaping. Supervises personnel in the proper use of tools and equipment. Delivers and distributes equipment and supplies to employees. Instructs new personnel in the approved courses of procedure and the proper methods involved in the job tasks. Performs tasks of a semi-skilled nature including mowing, equipment maintenance, irrigation maintenance, observation of turf problems, pesticide/fertilizer calibration and application, scheduling and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in ground maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of basic landscaping procedures.
  • Ability to direct the work of others.
  • Ability to use and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other related equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise others of lower classification.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
  • Ability to apply pesticides
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in turf and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
Required Qualifications

Successful completion of the tenth (10th) grade required. Experience in ground maintenance, gardening, landscaping, or related areas. Must maintain a valid TN Driver License.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years experience in ground maintenance, gardening, landscaping, or related areas preferred. High School diploma or GED preferred.

Physical Demands

Ability to work overtime as needed including weekends and evenings. Facilities employees may be required to report at their regularly scheduled times during emergency closures or during inclement weather to perform essential functions including snow removal duties.

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods for performing assigned work.
