Job Summary

The Department of Communication and Performance at East Tennessee State University seeks an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies. This position carries full-time, tenure-track status starting in August 2018, pending availability of funds.

We seek an energetic and inspiring faculty member with an emphasis in Interpersonal Communication who will help to grow our undergraduate major and newly revised master’s program in Communication and Storytelling Studies.

The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses; advise graduate and undergraduate programs of study, theses, and capstones; and lead the instruction of the Public Speaking course (one of the department’s three General Education courses). They also will pursue a focused research agenda as well as teaching and service programs that strongly support a case for tenure and promotion at ETSU.

In addition to teaching courses in Interpersonal Communication and related topics according to expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach a variety of communication studies courses at graduate and undergraduate levels, as needed. We are open to many specializations within Interpersonal, but we are especially interested in candidates whose emphases can help us to strengthen and broaden the performance focus of the department and build bridges that connect the Communication Studies and Storytelling programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Communication or closely related field.

Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the successful candidate must have completed all requirements for an earned doctorate prior to the start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Emphasis in interpersonal communication with associated specializations in one or more of the following: narrative; applied communication; performance studies; performance ethnography or other creative research approach; storytelling.

Experience in higher education teaching and research.

Evidence of ability to take leadership of the General Education Public Speaking course.

Research or creative activity that supports the performance focus of the department and connects the Communication Studies and Storytelling programs.
