Job Summary

The Charles C. Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is seeking a Director of Research and Instructional Services (RIS) to provide leadership and strategic direction for reference and research consulting, library instruction, and collection access services. Under the general supervision of the Dean of University Libraries, the Director will foster collaboration, manage, and support a team of library faculty and staff providing general reference and referral service; in-depth, specialized research consultation; library instruction; and circulation, course reserve, and collection maintenance. Reference, referral, research consultation, and instruction services are provided in-person and online. The Director of RIS will lead development and implementation of performance standards and practices for delivery and evaluation of the unit’s services. This position coordinates design and implementation of user-centered research, curriculum development in library research skills, and library partnerships with teaching faculty and other campus units to support teaching, learning, and research. As a member of the library leadership team, the Director will represent RIS needs, priorities, and perspectives in planning, budgeting, and evaluation discussions.
This position requires a varying work schedule that includes evening and weekend hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

-Serves on the library leadership team; leads strategic planning for user-centered library services aligned with University and Library plans.
-Oversees delivery of in-person and virtual reference/referral, research consulting, and library instruction services. Participates in providing research consulting and library instruction.
-Oversees collection access services including circulation, course reserve, and collection maintenance.
-Leads development and implementation of ongoing assessment of reference and referral, research consulting, and instruction services (course-related library instruction and library-developed workshops).
-Leads development and implementation of ongoing assessment of student engagement activities and library use of social media.
-Coordinates collection, analysis, and reporting of RIS assessment data.
-Collaborates with library and teaching faculty to design, implement, and evaluate curriculum-integrated library instruction.
-Coordinates and participates in faculty partnership activities to develop library collections and provide services supporting faculty teaching and research.
-Develops and maintains staffing plan and job descriptions for all RIS positions.
-Manages hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating RIS personnel; directly supervises RIS faculty and professional staff.
-Establishes, communicates, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures in consultation with RIS faculty and staff.
-Fosters ongoing library faculty and staff training and professional development.
-Fosters collaboration and teamwork among RIS faculty and staff; encourages exploration of innovative approaches, experiments, and sharing experiences and resources.
-Represents RIS needs, priorities, and perspectives in planning and budgeting.
-Engages in scholarly activity and service appropriate for tenure-track library faculty under the University and Library policies for tenure and promotion.
-Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

-Master’s degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent degree if earned outside the U.S. or Canada.
-At least five years of progressively more responsible professional experience providing research consulting, library instruction, and faculty outreach services.
-At least two years of experience in assessment of library instruction and of reference/research consulting service.
-At least two years of experience supervising librarians and professional staff in an academic library.
-Demonstrated proficiency using educational/instructional technologies.
-Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
-Evidence of commitment to responsive and effective user-centered service.
-Evidence of strong leadership and collaboration skills.
-Evidence of ongoing professional development, scholarly research and publication, and service appropriate for tenure-track library faculty.

Preferred Qualifications

-Experience working in a learning commons/information commons environment in an academic library.
-Experience with research needs of students and faculty at a Research Doctoral institution.
-Experience with peer review of library instruction.
-Evidence of leadership skills and experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating a library program or service.
-Evidence of innovation using new technologies and/or approaches to library service(s) or instruction.
-Evidence of professional activity related to information literacy and instruction in libraries.
