Job Summary

The East Tennessee State University Department of Music is looking for an outstanding trombone teacher and performer. The selected candidate will teach applied lessons to trombone students, and s/he will be expected to recruit and maintain a full studio. The position requires participation in the faculty brass quintet. Other areas of teaching may include low brass literature, brass pedagogy, and other classes according to departmental need. The position requires assistance with the maintenance of department owned brass instruments and continuing to expand relationships with area music professionals like band directors, orchestral directors, low brass teachers, and more.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate must demonstrate professional skills in playing trombone and strong teaching with a record of successful recruiting, and have knowledge of trombone literature and current pedagogical trends. He/she must have the aptitude to collaborate with music faculty and guest artists and connect with area teachers to build positive relations within the community.

Required Qualifications

A DMA in trombone performance (or equivalent) is required. Master’s Degree and ABD status will be considered. Distinction in artistic accomplishment in orchestral, jazz/modern, collaborative, and solo performance is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of collegiate teaching is preferred. Although not required, the department would like this candidate to teach other classes as needed. Depending on the candidate’s interests and qualifications, these classes may include Theory, Aural Skills, Music Appreciation, History of Jazz, Jazz Pedagogy, and/or Jazz Improvisation. Able to teach our Pre-College students is also desirable.

Salary Commensurate to candidate's experience.
