Job Summary

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Dean of University Libraries. East Tennessee State University, located in northeast Tennessee, is a state-supported institution serving over 15,000 students. It offers over 230 programs of study in its eleven colleges and schools. A description of ETSU, its programs and the region which it serves can be found at www.etsu.edu. The Dean of University Libraries is responsible to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for providing strong leadership in administration of the Charles C. Sherrod Library. The Dean is responsible for all areas of library management, including personnel management and organization, strategic planning and priority setting, fiscal management, policy and program development, and facilities maintenance and planning. The Dean is expected to provide strong, effective advocacy both externally and across the university; to participate in policy development; and to promote initiatives within the university, the community, and other institutions. The Dean promotes teamwork and collegiality among library faculty and staff to provide excellent service to all library constituencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of organization and management of personnel and complex organizations.
- Knowledge of budget development/management and program development.
- Ability to manage all resources creatively and flexibly so as to adapt to changing needs in the academic community.
- Knowledge of fund raising techniques.
- Knowledge of online and other forms of distance education.
- Knowledge of higher education and academic library standards.
- Knowledge of higher education issues and their impact on long-range planning of library operations.
- Knowledge of managing diversified academic library collections and their services, i.e., print, non-print, and electronic resources, as well as the technologies for making them accessible to patrons, on- and off-campus.
- Knowledge of current, emerging and developing information/library technologies, including mobile technologies.
- Ability to foster team building and participatory leadership.
- Ability to solve diverse problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with internal and external constituents.
- Experience managing tenure-track faculty, professional and support staff.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a M.L.S. or the equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited institution; ability to meet ETSU criteria for tenure and rank of associate or full professor; a minimum of ten years of experience in progressively more responsible positions in academic librarianship; documented administrative experience in a higher education setting; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Earned doctorate preferred; minimum 5 years of experience in senior level academic librarianship position preferred
